WHAT WE BELIEVE

WHAT TO EXPECT
OFFICE-BEARERS

Welcome. If you’re looking for a Brisbane church home, would like to know more about Christianity, or you’re visiting in the area, you’re most welcome to join with us.

This Brisbane Church believes:

The Bible consisting of the 66 books of the Old and New Testaments is the inerrant (without error) Word of God. Therefore, it is the final authority for faith and life.

There is one God who exists in three persons: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. He created and sustains all things according to His excellent purposes.

All mankind was created in the image of God, for the express purpose of worshipping, glorifying and enjoying Him.

As our holy and perfect Creator, God requires perfect obedience to His law, which is summarized in the 10 commandments. Perfect obedience is God’s purpose for a righteous and blessed life with Him.

Although mankind was created good, we rebelled and broke His good law, and all men and women continue to do so. Law-breaking is sin; every one of us is thus guilty of disobedience. We break God’s law in thought, words and actions. Man’s nature is now thoroughly sinful, and that’s why the world is full of sin, misery and violence. We deserve God’s just punishment, because every sin condemns us to eternal damnation. Ephesians 5:6. We are incapable of pleasing God in any way. We need a Saviour.

In love and mercy, Almighty God sent His Son, Jesus, into the world to save sinners. Jesus is fully God and yet fully man. Jesus is the anointed saviour – the Christ.

Jesus Christ lived a perfect, sinless life, died on the cross to suffer the infinite punishment of God for sin, and rose again bodily after three days. His life, death and resurrection purchased salvation and victory over death and damnation.

Faith is a gift of God (Ephesians 2:8), that enables a person to believe that Jesus is the Saviour. By that faith a Christian believes that He perfectly obeyed the law for him, was punished for his sin and rose from the dead so that he might have eternal life. By powerful grace and the Holy Spirit, God tenderly changes a sinner’s heart and will from rebellion against Him, to trust and love for Him.

If you believe these things, then not only are you saved from God’s just condemnation, you become a son or daughter of God. He adopts you into His family, the church.

You cannot be saved by what you do!

You can only be saved by what Jesus Christ has done for sinners. Jesus died in the place of sinners, taking their punishment on Himself at the cross. To be saved, you must trust and believe in Christ alone as your Saviour. As God gives such faith and trust, we repent. Repentance is confessing your sin to God and turning away from sin to follow Christ. That’s what a Christian is: a believer in, and a follower of, Jesus Christ.

Repent and believe. Mark 1:15. That’s the gospel message to all people.

If you believe that Jesus Christ died for your sins, then His perfect righteousness has replaced the condemnation that belonged to you. You will no longer be punished with everlasting death and judgement, but instead have everlasting life. It is Jesus’ free and most precious gift to every believer.

People trust in Christ only because the Holy Spirit changes them, opening spiritual eyes, and giving them spiritual life (when they were spiritually dead before). The Holy Spirit continues to live within believers, giving them strength to resist their sins, and to grow in the image of Christ in thoughts, words and actions.

Just like eyes, ears, arms, hands and legs are parts of your body, so Christians are members of a body with Jesus Christ as the Head. This body is the church. The Bible calls God’s people, saints. Sinning saints meet together to worship, grow and serve. Members of the church believe the gospel of Jesus Christ, and live a life out of faith in Him. Therefore, the church’s purpose is to show the wonder and beauty of God, and to declare the good news of salvation to the world.  In this Brisbane Church we take this purpose seriously.

Do you see Jesus? Believe in Him, for the salvation of your soul!

This world and life had a beginning and so it will also end. On the last day, Jesus Christ will return to judge those still living and those who have died. The dead will be raised bodily from the grave to receive God’s judgement. Those who believe in His Son Jesus, will live with Him in eternity, in heaven. Those who are judged still in their sins, will be condemned to eternal death, in hell.

The heavens and the Earth that we know, will be recreated into glorious perfection, also by the work of Jesus Christ.

What We Believe in More Detail

We believe all of the truths and doctrines found in the Bible – the Word of God, which is our supreme standard for faith and life.  We believe that these truths and doctrines are faithfully summarised in the:

  • Westminster Confession of Faith
  • Westminster Larger Catechism
  • Westminister Shorter Catechism
  • Form of Presbyterial Church Government
  • Directory of Public Worship

The above documents, as originally adopted by the Church of Scotland, are our Church standards.

Note that all of our office-bearers (minister, elders and deacons) subscribe to these standards entirely. Although church members are not required to subscribe to these standards, they are familiar with them and understand them to be their standards, as members of the Evangelical Presbyterian Brisbane Church.
